This is the first act, and more are supposed to follow. Once I understood that and buckled down, the game really opened up!! Heavy on the text and light on combat, with no respawns that I'm aware of, so you had to do quests to level and progress. I started off not being too sure what this game actually was, as the prior two games I had played were very combat-heavy, and this was more of a visual novel, I'd say. Today I finished Heroines of Swords and Spells, and what an excellent trip this was. Had the game warned me at the beginning that mages were scarce, and perhaps my protagonist should be one, I might have listened but no warning was to be had. This turned many of the battles into dreary, protracted slog-fests that ceased being fun two days ago. There are some golem type monsters that are well defended from any type of melee/missile weapons, and obviously somewhat weaker against mages. I do not like mages, I avoid them like the plague, but if the game requires them I'll certainly make use of them. I eschew mage types, so at the beginning of the game I made a stalwart warrior, and the next three companions I picked up along the was were also….warriors, with one being an archer. Where this game got annoying for me was with a couple of opponents.

It left me quite soured, which is a shame, because at the beginning I thought so highly of the game. So yeah, I got through the game, but I would have to think long and hard about ever replaying this, or recommending it to others. You can be rewarded for going off the beaten path, and looking where perhaps you've no reason for being. There is a riveting story, which you'll read much of at every camp fire, excellent combat (but keep reading), and stellar exploration. At it's heart, this game is a turn based Grim Rock, with all the goodness that you'd expect. When I first began this game, I quickly fell in love with it. This morning I wrapped up Operencia: The Stolen Sun.
